After studying art at the Hamilton Technical School and Toronto’s Central Technical School, Casson apprenticed as a commercial artist with Franklin Carmichael. Through Carmichael, Casson would meet the other members of the Group of Seven and they would become his mentors. Though he would not become a full-time painter until his retirement from his commercial art career in 1957, Casson replaced Johnston as a member of the Group of Seven in 1926. Casson’s time spent as a graphic designer and calligrapher is evidenced in his carefully composed depictions of Canadian villages and landscapes.
