Born on the Red Pheasant Reserve in north central Saskatchewan, Allen was raised by his grandmother Maggie Soonias, who encouraged his early interest in drawing. Much of Allen’s work depicts his memories of the old ways on the reserve. Despite experiencing poverty, the love and joy that surrounded Allen can be seen in much of his painting. The striking blue skies of Saskatchewan are unique feature prominently in his work. Helped by his patron, Doctor Allan Gonor of North Battleford, Allen became a very successful artist, being elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Art and becoming a member of the Order of Canada in recognition of his artistry in recording the daily life of the Cree people. A beautiful gallery has been established in North Battleford to display some of his greatest works.
