Born at Midway Manor, Wiltshire, England, Edward moved to Orillia, Ontario in 1861 with his father, Henry N.S. Shrapnel. He remained in Ontario for the next 29 years, where he honed his artistic skills. Travelling to Muskoka many times, he specialized in landscapes, wildlife and indigenous culture and taught at Ontario Ladies College in Whitby for 5 years. In 1889, Edward moved to Victoria, British Columbia, where he lived until his death in 1920. He was president of Victoria’s first Art Association for over 11 years. This untitled painting from 1900 depicts Gorge Bridge at Tillicum, Victoria, British Columbia. The people travelling along the Gorge Waterway are Songhees and Esquimalt families.
