Born in Toronto, Sheppard studied under George Reid and J.W. Beatty at The Central School of Art and Design (later known as The Ontario College of Art). As with The Group of Seven, Sheppard was influenced by the French Impressionists. Sheppard, along with his dear friend Bernice Martin, spent a great deal of time in Muskoka in the 1930’s. Their sketches were done en plein air, as was the practice of the great impressionists. Sheppard’s work has undergone a resurgence of popularity in recent years with his larger works selling for over $200,000.
